Why We Breed
Every breeding is a promise—to the breed, to the puppies we bring into the world, and to the families who trust us with their hearts.
People often ask us why we chose German Shepherds.
The answer is simple.
We fell in love with their hearts.
German Shepherds are incredibly intelligent, but they're also goofy, affectionate, fiercely loyal, and always eager to be part of whatever you're doing. They're just as happy hiking through the woods, swimming on a hot summer day, competing in obedience, rally, agility, or bite work as they are curled up at your feet after a long day. They truly want to be your partner in life.
As our love for the breed grew, so did our desire to protect everything that makes the German Shepherd so special.
Working in veterinary medicine has given me the privilege of meeting thousands of dogs and the families who love them. I've celebrated healthy puppies growing into wonderful companions, but I've also witnessed the heartbreaking side of poor breeding decisions. I've watched families say goodbye to dogs suffering from Degenerative Myelopathy (DM). I've seen dogs struggle with painful orthopedic disease, and I've comforted owners dealing with heartbreaking behavioral issues caused by unstable genetics.
Those moments stay with you.
They changed the way I viewed breeding forever.
I realized that responsible breeding isn't simply about producing beautiful puppies. It's about giving families the greatest chance at a healthy, stable companion that will share their lives for years to come.
Thankfully, this has never been just my dream.
My husband, Ryan, shares the same passion for these incredible dogs and has been beside me through every step of this journey. From raising puppies and training dogs to building our kennel, traveling to events, celebrating every success, and working through every disappointment together, Sterley Shepherds has always been a team effort. We each bring different strengths, but we share the same goal: to preserve and produce healthy, confident, stable German Shepherds that families will love for a lifetime.
When I first entered the German Shepherd world, I owned East German working lines. They taught me so much and deepened my appreciation for the breed. But everything changed when I met my first West German Show Line Shepherd. I instantly fell in love with their balanced temperament, their willingness to work, and their incredible ability to transition seamlessly from the training field to family life.
That balance is what we strive to preserve in every Sterley Shepherd.
For us, breeding has never been about putting two beautiful dogs together and hoping for the best.
Every breeding begins with one simple question:
"How can we make the next generation even better?"
That means understanding each dog's strengths and weaknesses. Studying generations of pedigrees. Completing comprehensive health testing. Evaluating temperament, structure, and working ability. Making thoughtful breeding decisions that prioritize the future of the breed over convenience.
Because every decision we make today affects families for the next ten to fifteen years.
Health testing isn't optional.
Sound temperaments aren't optional.
Lifetime support isn't optional.
They are the foundation of everything we do.
But breeding is also incredibly humbling.
No matter how carefully you plan, no matter how much health testing you complete, or how many generations you study, nature sometimes has other plans.
We've experienced the heartbreak of watching a puppy face a serious medical challenge despite every effort to stack the odds in its favor. Those moments never become easier. They aren't simply "part of breeding" to us—they're deeply personal. Every puppy matters. Every family matters. When something doesn't go as planned, we ask difficult questions, search for answers, and constantly look for ways to improve because that's the responsibility we accepted the day we decided to become breeders.
Those experiences haven't discouraged us.
They've strengthened our commitment to learn more, improve more, and never stop striving to be better.
People often assume success is measured by championships, ribbons, or titles.
While we're proud of those accomplishments, that's not what success looks like to us.
Success is opening our phones to a message that says,
"We couldn't imagine our life without this dog."
It's hearing that a Sterley Shepherd has become a child's best friend.
It's seeing one hiking mountains with its family, earning titles in sport, working alongside its owner, or simply lying on the couch after another ordinary day filled with love.
It's hearing someone say how easy their dog has been to train, how everyone who meets them falls in love with them, and that they'll never get a dog from anyone else.
Those are the moments that make every sleepless night, every worry, every setback, and every difficult decision worth it.
Sterley Shepherds wasn't built overnight.
It was built one dog, one lesson, one success, one heartbreak, and one puppy at a time.
When you bring home a Sterley Shepherd, you're not just purchasing a puppy.
You're becoming part of our family.
Ryan and I will celebrate your dog's milestones, answer your questions, and continue supporting you long after your puppy leaves our home. Our responsibility doesn't end on pickup day—it lasts for the lifetime of every dog we bring into this world.
Our goal has never been to produce the most puppies.
Our goal is to preserve everything that made us fall in love with the German Shepherd in the first place—its intelligence, loyalty, versatility, confidence, and unwavering heart—while thoughtfully improving each generation through health, temperament, structure, and purpose.
And if, years from now, you look over at your Sterley Shepherd sleeping peacefully at your feet and think,
"I can't imagine my life without this dog."
...then we've accomplished exactly what we set out to do.
