🐾 Training Tip: Teaching the “Place” Command

The "Place" command teaches your dog to go to a designated spot—like a mat, cot, or bed—and stay there until released. It’s a great tool for impulse control and household manners.

🎯 What You’ll Need:

  • A clearly defined “place” (dog bed, mat, or raised cot)

  • Treats your dog loves

  • Leash (optional, for guidance)

  • Clicker or a verbal marker like “Yes!”

📘 Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Introduce the Place

  • Stand by the designated spot and say, “Place” while pointing to it.

  • Lure your dog onto it with a treat.

  • Once all four paws are on, mark the moment with “Yes!” and reward.

2. Build Duration

  • Begin delaying the treat by a few seconds to encourage your dog to stay.

  • Reward again if they remain on the spot.

3. Teach the Release

  • After a few seconds, say a release word like “Free!” or “Okay!”

  • Encourage your dog off the spot, then praise and reward again.

4. Increase Distance and Distraction

  • Once your dog understands the basics, add small challenges.

  • Step away slightly or add minor distractions to build reliability.

5. Practice Regularly

  • Keep sessions short and upbeat (5–10 minutes).

  • Practice in different environments to build generalization.

✅ Pro Tips:

  • Stay calm and patient—progress takes time.

  • Don’t scold for leaving the place early; just calmly guide them back and try again.

  • Use the "Place" command during dinner, when guests arrive, or anytime calm behavior is needed.
